In January 2008, Claude Neon Federal
completed a 14 month project for the new $72 million Children's Hospital at
Saint Francis. This was a design/build project that started with a concept
presentation and proceeded into a full scale interior and exterior, identity and
wayfinding package.
 Claude
Neon's designers worked directly with the hospital administrators and facilities
directors to create themed signage for each level of the hospital. All of the
characters began life as hand drawn illustrations and were refined to create
characters that would easily recognizable as to the children getting treatment
in this premier health care facility. The purpose of the design direction was to
create a friendly, festive environment for children and if possible help them
forget where they are for just a little while. Expressive
color schemes were developed to uphold the theme as well.
Claude Neon's team then went to work
programming the sign system and developing easily fabricated and re-usable
signage. The room identity messages are easily changed by the Hospital's
in-house sign department. Specialty signage was also designed to identify
locations such as the snack bar, playground, information desk and gift shop.
 For
the exterior identity of the hospital, iconic signage was created for the top of
the tower which is visible up to a mile away. The Hospital's mascot, panda, was
recreated in aluminum and flex face material at a height of 28'. It's face
illuminated by white LED's and halo lit on the wall with LEDs as well.
A beveled stainless steel cross was fabricated for the east end of the fascia
and is also halo illuminated with white LEDs. Porte cochere identity is
established with traditional channel letter signage and can be see at ground
level in the patient drop off area.
